The 2026 FIFA World Cup has set a new record with $20 billion in prediction market transactions, as reported by blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis.
This substantial figure reflects activity from nearly 400,000 wallets, starting from January 2026, and includes $5.7 billion generated during the tournament itself.
From Tournament Victors to Emotional Moments
Betting markets covered a wide range of topics, from predicting the tournament winner to whether soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo would shed tears upon Portugal's elimination (which he did).
Taking place in June and July, the World Cup has emerged as the most significant event in prediction markets, vastly surpassing the previous record of $3.6 billion set during the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. Other notable events, such as Super Bowl 60 and the NCAA's March Madness, also exceeded the $1 billion mark.
Prediction markets function as derivatives contracts based on the outcomes of future events, settling once the events conclude.
Market leader Polymarket operates on blockchain technology, facilitating trades and settlements in the stablecoin USDC. This has contributed to a growing mainstream interest in blockchain solutions.
In April, Polymarket was valued at $15 billion during funding discussions, while its main competitor, Kalshi, is reportedly aiming for a valuation of $40 billion in its latest investment negotiations.
