Coinbase Reports Strong Q3 Earnings

Coinbase has bounced back from previous losses, announcing a net income of $719 million for the third quarter of 2023, translating to $2.51 per share. This marks a significant turnaround, as analysts had anticipated a loss of 15 cents per share. However, it's important to note that approximately $715 million of this profit stemmed from gains on the company's own cryptocurrency holdings. Excluding these investment gains, the adjusted net income was reported at $78 million.

Total revenue reached $1.22 billion, aligning with expectations but showing a decline of 35% year-over-year. Despite a slight 1% drop in transaction revenue to $590 million, this figure exceeded analyst predictions of around $527 million, reflecting the impact of reduced trading volumes amid lower crypto market volatility.

Growth in Prediction Markets

A highlight of the quarter was the performance of Coinbase's prediction markets, which surpassed $200 million in annualized revenue. This segment has emerged as one of the company's fastest-growing products, with daily traders increasing by over 60% from the previous quarter. The revenue from this area has compounded at an impressive rate of 82% each quarter since its launch, according to CEO Brian Armstrong.

Furthermore, subscription and services revenue rose by 3% to $570 million, contributing nearly half of the company's total net revenue. Notably, revenue from stablecoins reached $307 million, with the average USDC held in Coinbase products hitting a record $22 billion. The number of paid Coinbase One subscribers also increased by 24% year-over-year, while the exchange's share of global crypto trading volume climbed to 10.7%, marking its fourth consecutive quarterly gain.

Cost Management and Future Outlook

In response to previous financial pressures, Coinbase has adjusted its expense guidance for 2026 down by $100 million, now estimating expenses to be between $4.15 billion and $4.3 billion. The company also reported a 60% increase in adjusted EBITDA from the prior quarter, reaching $333 million. As of October 25, transaction revenue for the fourth quarter is estimated at approximately $165 million.

The recent results come after two consecutive quarters of losses, during which Coinbase reported a $394 million loss in Q1 2023 and missed earnings estimates in Q2. Despite a 55% decline in stock price from its 52-week high of $361.40, shares closed at $160.59, a decrease of 1.1% before the earnings announcement, with little change in after-hours trading.
