Crypto Spending Surges in Midterm Elections

The cryptocurrency sector is making significant financial investments in the upcoming midterm elections, with expenditures totaling approximately $176 million across over 100 races.

Voter Priorities Diverge from Industry Focus

Despite the industry's hefty spending, a recent Ipsos survey reveals that only 13% of Americans consider it crucial for candidates to support emerging technologies like cryptocurrency and decentralized finance (DeFi). In contrast, a broader concern about fostering financial technology innovation in the U.S. garnered more attention, with 35% of respondents prioritizing this issue.

While both Republicans and Democrats show similar levels of support for crypto, with 15% and 13% respectively deeming it very important, there is a notable partisan divide on the broader innovation question, where 45% of Republicans prioritize it compared to 30% of Democrats.

Spending Breakdown and Political Stakes

The bulk of the crypto-related funding is funneled through super PAC Fairshake and its affiliates, which have accounted for around $150.8 million of the total. Notably, one affiliate has reported over $46 million in spending aimed at opposing former Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio's Senate race.

The urgency of the industry's investment is underscored by recent legislative setbacks, such as the failure of the Clarity Act, which sought to establish federal regulations for crypto markets. Following this, the industry has pivoted to engaging with regulatory bodies like the SEC and CFTC to shape future rules.

Broader Concerns Among Voters

Voter sentiments indicate a greater concern for security and control over financial products than for cryptocurrency itself. About 63% of participants believe the financial system requires modernization to address challenges like AI and cybercrime, while 49% oppose government intervention in determining investment options.
