๐Ÿ” Strategy CEO Defends Timing of Bitcoin Sales and Purchases

Strategy executed the sale of 6,916 BTC in four separate transactions from late June to mid-August, averaging a price of approximately $62,200. Last week, the company acquired 4,603 BTC at an average price of $80,318. CEO Phong Le stated in an appearance on Bloomberg Crypto last Wednesday that both decisions were well-founded.

Le explained that the price of Bitcoin was not the primary factor in their decisions. The sales were made to finance STRC dividends at a time when issuing shares had become costly, and the recent purchases were motivated by MSTR trading at a premium again. During the two-month interval, Strategy's assets grew to $72 billion, they amassed about $7 billion in cash reserves, and eliminated their net debt, which had been around $7 billion. A stronger balance sheet allows for cheaper equity issuance, making Bitcoin acquisition more feasible.

Additionally, Le clarified that the sales represented less than 1% of their holdings, which have increased by 25% to 30% this year, leaving the company with 845,050 BTC valued at approximately $65.4 billion. He emphasized that merely accumulating Bitcoin does not constitute a fully operational company, and a blend of buying and selling Bitcoin, equities, and preferred shares is essential for their operations. He characterized Strategy as a dual-capital management firm.

The critical mechanism at play is STRC, a variable-rate preferred stock that Strategy aims to maintain close to its $100 stated value. When it dipped below par in June, their funding options became limited, making Bitcoin their sole avenue for attempting a re-peg (which has yet to occur). Le acknowledged that the decision was primarily driven by financing needs. He also indicated that the company's Bitcoin purchasing strategy hinges on its stock premium, which is influenced by Bitcoin prices. This creates a complex dilemma, and it appears they have chosen to prioritize MSTR equity holders at the expense of others. However, in a bullish market, these strategies could yield significant benefits, and time will tell if that is the case.
