Bitcoin has fallen below the $80,000 mark over the weekend, closing at $80,160, reflecting a 2.4% decrease for the week. This downturn follows reports indicating that the U.S. is hastily evacuating personnel from embassies and military bases in the Middle East due to heightened threats from Iran against U.S. personnel. The situation escalated after a memo from Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton was made public, detailing Iran's intensified targeting efforts.
Ethereum also experienced a decline, dropping 3.8% to $2,322, while Solana fell 3.2% to $101. In the broader market, the CMC20 index saw a 2.3% decrease. Over the past month, Bitcoin has lost 4.8% of its value, with major cryptocurrencies averaging a more significant drop of 16.5%. Other declines include Ethereum at 13.6%, Solana at 17.1%, and XRP at 17.4%. However, Zcash stood out with an 8% weekly gain, marking a 135% rise for the year, and Monero increased by 37% amid growing interest in privacy-focused assets during this turbulent period.
This week is crucial for the financial markets, with the Federal Reserve set to announce its next steps regarding interest rates on Wednesday. The European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan will follow with their own decisions later in the week. Additionally, important economic indicators such as Q3 GDP and September PCE data are scheduled for release. The upcoming Robinhood earnings call on Tuesday is also anticipated to address key developments, including the company's approach to tokenized stocks and its ecosystem initiatives.
