J.P. Morgan's New Forecast for Bitcoin
In a significant move, J.P. Morgan Asset Management has included Bitcoin in its annual Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report for the first time, projecting a 10% compound annual return over the next 10 to 15 years. This forecast positions Bitcoin as a top performer compared to U.S. large-cap stocks, which are expected to yield 7.5%, and gold at 5.5%.
Volatility Concerns
Despite the optimistic return prediction, the bank has raised concerns about Bitcoin's volatility, estimating it at 55% annually. This high volatility contrasts sharply with gold’s 17%, suggesting that while the potential returns appear attractive, the risks involved are substantial. The report indicates that Bitcoin's arithmetic average return could be around 20.9%, but this figure is tempered by the reality of price fluctuations that investors would face.
Exclusion from Core Models
Interestingly, J.P. Morgan has opted not to include Bitcoin in its primary portfolio models, citing its volatility and unstable correlations with other assets. Instead, the firm created a separate, smaller correlation matrix for Bitcoin, acknowledging the challenges it presents for traditional investment strategies.
