On October 20, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) granted approval for the country's first spot Bitcoin ETF aimed at retail investors. This decision marks a significant development in the Swiss cryptocurrency market, as it allows individual investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through an exchange-traded fund. FINMA made an exception to its diversification rules, citing Bitcoin's longer trading history and higher trading volumes compared to other cryptocurrencies. While the specific issuer of the ETF has not been disclosed, the regulator noted that other asset management firms have either submitted or announced their applications for similar products. Despite this progress, FINMA cautioned that investments in Bitcoin, even through an ETF, carry substantial risks. Since 2018, cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETPs) have been listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange, but these are classified as debt securities rather than traditional funds.
