Mastercard Introduces Fraud Prevention Tool for Stablecoin Payments

Mastercard Launches Stablecoin Security

Mastercard has unveiled a new tool named Stablecoin Security, designed to help financial institutions detect fraud and sanctions exposure in stablecoin transactions before they are executed. This initiative was announced at the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas and aims to enhance the security of dollar-pegged token payments.

The tool integrates Mastercard's payment intelligence with blockchain analytics, providing a comprehensive risk assessment throughout the transaction lifecycle. It generates a risk score prior to settlement, allowing institutions to better manage potential fraud risks.

Addressing Transaction Complexity

The launch responds to concerns highlighted by a Bank for International Settlements study, which indicated that nearly 60% of stablecoin transfers in 2025 were expected to involve complex, multi-step transactions. This complexity makes it challenging for institutions to evaluate risk effectively.

Stablecoin Security, developed in collaboration with partners Borderless.xyz and Keyrails, is delivered via a platform-agnostic API. It analyzes various risk indicators, such as the origin of funds and potential exposure to restricted parties, integrating seamlessly into existing compliance frameworks.

Expanding Mastercard's Stablecoin Efforts

Mastercard's stablecoin initiatives include its Global Money Platform, created in partnership with BVNK, and support for AI-enabled payments with firms like Coinbase and Ripple. The company has also secured a New York BitLicense for stablecoin and tokenized deposit operations.

Ann Johnson, Mastercard's executive vice president of security solutions, emphasized the importance of having the right tools for financial institutions to engage confidently with stablecoins, stating, "Stablecoins are creating new possibilities for value exchange, but financial institutions need the right intelligence and controls to participate with confidence."

Initially available in North America, Mastercard plans to roll out Stablecoin Security globally by 2027, extending its reach through existing products like Crypto Credential and Crypto Secure.
