Quantinuum has partnered with Taiwanese computing infrastructure manufacturer Quanta Computer to develop a hardware platform aimed at large-scale quantum systems.

The collaboration seeks to transition quantum equipment production from laboratory settings to a more modular and industrial approach.

From Laboratory to Industrial Production

Under this agreement, the two companies plan to co-develop the hardware infrastructure, systems engineering, and manufacturing processes for future generations of Quantinuum's quantum computers. Initial work has commenced, with partners designing new components that emphasize modularity, reproducibility, and scalability.

For Quantinuum, this partnership addresses a crucial industry challenge: moving from building individual complex setups to producing systems that can be manufactured and deployed at scale.

“It is time for quantum computing to move from laboratory physics achievements to manufacturing systems that can be deployed and operated at scale,” remarked Rajib Hazra, CEO of Quantinuum.

Quanta Computer brings extensive experience in industrial-scale production of complex computing infrastructure. The Taiwanese firm ranks among the world's largest manufacturers of servers and systems for cloud and high-performance computing.

Focus on Trapped Ions

The partnership is closely tied to the trapped-ion architecture utilized by Quantinuum. The company constructs its processors using QCCD (Quantum Charge-Coupled Device), which enables ions to move between distinct zones within the quantum system.

Quantinuum has already commercially deployed multiple generations of such systems and asserts that its QCCD implementation has achieved one of the highest industry accuracies for two-qubit operations.

The next phase will involve creating infrastructure capable of supporting significantly larger systems with error correction capabilities.

Quanta to Address Scalability Challenges

Quanta specializes in transforming complex computing architectures into mass-producible systems and global supply chains.

Quantinuum anticipates that their collaboration will allow for synchronized advancement in technology, manufacturing, and supply chains, thereby narrowing the gap between quantum computer prototyping and commercial deployment.

However, the companies have not yet disclosed specific production volumes, the financial terms of the agreement, or timelines for the rollout of new systems.

Quantinuum Accelerates Commercialization

The partnership with Quanta follows several recent steps by Quantinuum to commercialize its technology. In August, the company entered a multi-year agreement with Oracle, wherein its quantum computer Helios will be hosted at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and made accessible to clients on the cloud platform.

Additionally, Quantinuum recently announced achieving nearly an 800-fold increase in logical accuracy on Helios.

It is worth noting that in May, Petra Florizun, the global sales director for IBM Quantum, declared the onset of a practical era for quantum computing. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna expects investments in this area to begin showing “significant” impacts on profits by 2028.
