OpenAI has begun rolling out an age prediction feature in ChatGPT. If a minor is using the chatbot, the account will be subject to "appropriate approaches and safety measures for teens."

We’re rolling out age prediction on ChatGPT to help determine when an account likely belongs to someone under 18, so we can apply the right experience and safeguards for teens.

Adults who are incorrectly placed in the teen experience can confirm their age in Settings > Account.…

If the algorithm mistakenly categorizes an adult as a teen, this can be corrected through verification via the Persona service.

The feature is being implemented globally to reduce minors' exposure to sensitive and potentially harmful content.

"This also allows us to treat adults as adults and use the tools as they wish, within safety limits," the announcement states.

How It Works

The model assesses age by analyzing behavioral factors, such as chat activity duration. If OpenAI is uncertain about a user's age, it automatically opts for a safer option.

Additional safety measures can be viewed in the account settings, which limit exposure to materials containing:

  • scenes of violence and cruelty;
  • viral challenges that may encourage risky or harmful behavior;
  • sexual or violent role-playing;
  • images of self-harm;
  • promotion of unrealistic beauty standards, strict diets, and criticism of appearance.

This initiative is based on scientific data regarding child development and takes into account the nuances of adolescent psychology.

In addition to the new service, a parental control feature is available, allowing users to set "quiet hours" or receive notifications upon detecting signs of acute distress.

In September, OpenAI announced the development of technology for age determination.

Following its integration, there are plans to add erotic content to ChatGPT.
