Blind Romance Illustrator Returns to Art with AI Assistance

John Paul Ferrara, a seasoned illustrator known for his work in the romance novel industry, has found a way to continue his artistic journey despite losing his sight. After undergoing surgery for a benign brain tumor in 2020, Ferrara faced significant vision loss but has adapted by leveraging artificial intelligence.

Starting in August 2025, Ferrara began using AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, focusing on detailed prompts to guide the technology in creating art. Drawing from his extensive background, he meticulously articulated elements such as lighting, colors, angles, and character placement to produce images that he cannot see himself. Caregivers assist him in reviewing the final results.

With a career spanning nearly 40 years, Ferrara has created around 1,000 covers and received over 20 awards from the American Romance Writers Association. His portfolio includes both classical paintings and commercial illustrations, with notable projects for brands like Chopard and Oral-B. His artwork has also appeared in fashion magazines and on casino slot machines.

In recent times, Ferrara has shifted his focus to spiritually themed creations, which he shares on social media. He expressed his unique perspective, stating, "I feel as if I have eyes, even though I cannot see what I create." He is set to debut a new series titled "The Spirit From Within" in a virtual gallery on December 8, 2026.
