- The bank's proprietary blockchain will facilitate payments and automatically manage them through its existing client interface.
- Once fully operational, the bank anticipates offering features like 24/7 settlement and programmable payments, with plans to broaden its service to additional clients, countries, and currencies in 2027.
Wells Fargo (WFC) plans to roll out tokenized deposits for select corporate and commercial clients later this year, starting with enabling continuous U.S. dollar-to-British pound transactions on its proprietary blockchain.
The bank highlights future enhancements that include continuous settlement, programmable payments, and consistency with existing deposit protections, stating that clients will have the ability to move, program, and settle funds 24/7/365 "when fully deployed."
The initial rollout will gradually expand to include more clients, countries, and currencies throughout 2027. Payments will automatically utilize tokenized deposits when it enhances speed or flexibility, while maintaining the current client interaction with the bank.
Tokenized deposits reflect traditional bank balances on a blockchain. Unlike stablecoins, they are considered commercial bank money, and Wells Fargo assures that they will offer the same regulatory protections and deposit-insurance eligibility as their current deposit products.
Future functionalities may include conditional payments via smart contracts, as indicated by the bank.
Additionally, the platform may offer internal custodial wallets and connections to other blockchains. Wells Fargo noted its capability to integrate with a shared tokenized-deposit network being developed by The Clearing House, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The bank is now joining JPMorgan and Citi, who already provide institutional tokenized-deposit services, as they respond to the increasing competition from stablecoins that threaten their deposit bases. This initiative follows Wells Fargo’s trademark application in March for WFUSD, which could relate to a deposit token or stablecoin.
Wells Fargo has been working on blockchain payment systems since at least 2019, when it unveiled Wells Fargo Digital Cash for internal cross-border transfers. Subsequently, it began settling foreign-exchange transactions with HSBC using a shared blockchain.
