Mirae Asset has acquired a substantial 97.15% stake in Korbit, South Korea’s oldest cryptocurrency exchange, and is set to rebrand it as Digital X. This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive ecosystem that integrates real-world assets, stablecoins, and various digital assets.

The company is not merely looking to capture a share of the Korean market; it aspires to develop what it calls an "intelligent investment platform." In an email to CoinDesk, Mirae stated, "We plan to enhance investor education and research capabilities, developing Digital X into an 'intelligent investment platform' where knowledge, information, and in-depth investment insights are organically connected."

The name change to Digital X symbolizes a future filled with possibilities, where different forms of value are interconnected. This vision extends beyond the rebranding effort.

Ambitious Goals

Mirae envisions creating an investment ecosystem where real-world assets, security token offerings, stablecoins, traditional assets, and digital assets are seamlessly linked. The aim is to position Digital X as an infrastructure layer, rather than just another exchange vying for trading volumes in the competitive South Korean crypto landscape.

Currently, Korbit holds less than 1% of the domestic crypto market, significantly trailing behind larger players like Upbit and Bithumb. When asked about its competitive strategy, Mirae Asset emphasized that its focus is not on surpassing other exchanges but on fostering sustainable growth within the digital asset sector in South Korea.

The firm remarked, "We intend to merge Mirae Asset's extensive global investment expertise with Korbit's digital asset capabilities to encourage the healthy and sustainable development of the digital asset industry in Korea and beyond."

In essence, Mirae Asset aims not to outshine Upbit or Bithumb but to create a comprehensive solution that combines institutional investment capabilities, research, education, and digital asset infrastructure under one roof.

Furthermore, the company has committed to adhering to strict anti-money laundering (AML), know your customer (KYC), and fraud detection standards throughout its operations, indicating that Digital X is designed to cater to both institutional clients and retail investors.

Recently, Mirae Asset Consulting secured regulatory approval from South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission to finalize its acquisition of Korbit. The firm explained, "The acquisition was conducted through lawful procedures following a thorough review of the relevant laws and regulatory framework. Mirae Asset Consulting was selected as the acquiring entity after comprehensive consideration of each affiliate’s business purpose and role, as well as its potential synergies with the digital asset business."

Currently, there are no plans to acquire the remaining shares, as the company aims to concentrate on enhancing the competitiveness of Digital X.
