Birch Hill has raised $4 million to integrate U.S. loans onto blockchains, aiming to innovate the private credit market.
Startup Aims to Revolutionize Loan Market with Blockchain Technology
Birch Hill, a startup founded by former Wall Street professionals, has successfully raised $4 million in seed funding to facilitate the integration of American apartment, agricultural, and energy loans onto public blockchains. The funding round was led by Multicoin Capital, with contributions from ParaFi Capital, Castle Island Ventures, and Nascent, bringing the company's total funding to $6.5 million.
The firm, headquartered in New York, is spearheaded by CEO Bhavin Vaid, who previously worked as an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs and in private equity at Cerberus Capital Management. Co-founder and COO Connor Flanagan has a background at BlackRock, where he was involved with the Aladdin risk management platform.
Innovative Approach to Private Credit
Birch Hill operates through three main divisions. Its Vaults division is officially recognized as a curator for Morpho, an onchain lending protocol, where it evaluates creditworthiness and establishes risk parameters. The Strategies unit is focused on creating onchain credit products, including a proprietary strategy named Birch Hill Absolute Value. Additionally, the Enterprise division has sought broker-dealer status from FINRA to offer private credit to accredited investors.
Vaid emphasized the necessity for new capital sources for loan originators and the need for reliable credit for onchain lenders, stating, “Loan originators need new sources of capital, and onchain lenders need credit they can trust.”
Future Plans and Regulatory Engagement
Looking ahead, Birch Hill aims to securitize pools of multifamily, agricultural, and energy loans to be held onchain, aligning with the U.S. regulatory framework. The company has engaged with the SEC’s Crypto Task Force to discuss its strategy and believes that traditional financial institutions will only invest in credit structures they are familiar with.
The recent funding will support an eight-member team, which includes new hires from Yearn and Gauntlet, enhancing its capabilities in business development and product innovation. Shayon Sengupta from Multicoin highlighted the fragmented nature of the private credit market, viewing it as a significant opportunity for developing new financial infrastructure onchain.
This funding round arrives amid increasing acceptance of onchain finance, especially following the SEC's proposed Regulation Crypto Assets, which could ease the process for projects to raise capital through token sales without extensive registration requirements.
