Investor Michael Burry, known for predicting the 2008 global financial crisis, has strongly criticized leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI giants on social media platform X for their calls to slow AI development. He described their motives as "exclusively self-serving."
Burry argues that large language models (LLMs) do not constitute true AI, let alone artificial general intelligence (AGI), claiming there is nothing to slow down. He believes the real reason behind these calls is a fear of increasing competition. Furthermore, Burry contends that discussions about the "dangers" of their own products are merely marketing strategies designed to create hype necessary for successful IPOs, especially in light of a genuine but concealed slowdown in company growth.
