Innovative Project Brings iOS to Android Hardware

In a groundbreaking development, hackers have managed to run Apple's iOS on select Android smartphones, demonstrating the feat through viral video clips. A notable example features iOS 16 booting on a Redmi Note 12, which garnered over 2 million views on X, with another demonstration showcasing a Nothing 3a.

The project, dubbed ios-sweet, combines Apple's XNU kernel with unmodified iOS 16.7.16 files, adapted for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 732G chipset. While the system can reach the lock screen and home interface, it currently lacks functionality for Wi-Fi, mobile data, audio, and camera features.

Historical Context of OS Interoperability

This achievement marks a significant reversal in the trend of operating systems running on incompatible hardware. Historically, Android has previously been ported to iPhones, with projects like iDroid in 2010 and Corellium's Project Sandcastle a decade later. However, this is the first instance of iOS being successfully run on Android devices.

“WTf, Running real iOS on Android hardware,” tweeted Md Ismail Šojal, a prominent developer involved in the HackiOS initiative, which aims to create a fully functional iOS experience on Android.

Another team, OOSexGang, claims to have run iOS 16.5 on a Poco X5 Pro, showcasing its capabilities through a demo. However, this project lacks public source code or verification, raising questions about its authenticity.

Implications and Future Potential

The ability to run iOS on Android devices could reshape the smartphone landscape, allowing users to experience Apple's software on more affordable hardware. Despite the current limitations, enthusiasts are eager to explore the potential of this technology.

As the hacking community continues to innovate, tools like REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) and recent jailbreaks of iPhones suggest a growing trend of breaking down barriers between different operating systems. For now, however, users looking to experiment should proceed with caution, as installing iOS on an Android device will erase existing data and compromise security features.
