AI Developer Launches Free Clones of Microsoft Office

Brandon Thomas, the creator behind the popular ArtCraft project, has unveiled a suite of open-source applications that replicate Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The new apps, named WordCraft, GridCraft, and DeckCraft, were developed using the AI model Claude from Anthropic and are available on GitHub.

The clones aim to provide users with a free alternative to Microsoft 365, which charges $99.99 annually for a single user. Thomas's versions are designed to run offline and are built in Rust, a programming language known for its performance and reliability.

Features and Capabilities

WordCraft currently supports 88% of Microsoft Word's ribbon features and can read and write .docx files. However, Thomas's team estimates that it is only about 60% ready for practical use, as it is still in the alpha stage. GridCraft, the Excel alternative, covers 513 out of 523 functions found in Excel and has been rated around 50% ready, while DeckCraft handles 79% of PowerPoint's features.

Despite their current limitations, these applications can perform many common office tasks, and their user interfaces closely resemble that of Microsoft Office, which may ease the transition for users. All three applications allow for AI-driven commands, enabling users to execute complex tasks with simple prompts.

Market Impact

This release comes at a time when many users are seeking cost-effective solutions to high subscription fees. The availability of free alternatives like Thomas's apps could disrupt the market for office software, which has seen limited competition in recent years. While other free office suites exist, such as OpenOffice and LibreOffice, Thomas's rapid development cycle, aided by AI, offers a fresh take on office productivity tools.

As the project progresses, further enhancements are expected, including improved compatibility with real-world documents and additional features. Thomas has already garnered significant attention, with WordCraft receiving over 12,000 stars on GitHub shortly after its launch.
