Google has swiftly removed its AI image-generation feature from Google Earth just one day after its launch on July 30, due to serious concerns about its misuse for creating misleading satellite images.
The Nano Banana tool allowed users to generate images by entering text prompts. However, by July 31, the feature was taken offline following reports that it could easily fabricate events, such as a blast crater in Los Angeles or a flooded U.S. Capitol, raising alarms about potential misinformation.
Concerns Over Misinformation
In a statement on X, Google acknowledged the unique trust users place in Google Earth for accurate geographic information. While the tool was seen as beneficial by geospatial professionals, it was also misused, prompting the company to enhance its safeguards before considering a relaunch.

Investigations revealed that users could create entirely fictional scenarios without any restrictions. Open-source researcher Henk van Ess demonstrated this by generating images of refugees at the Mexican border and a nuclear plant in Iran, indicating that the tool lacked necessary safeguards against harmful content.
Future of the Tool
Despite initial assurances that AI-generated images would be marked with a SynthID watermark, critics pointed out the risk of misinformation spreading rapidly, as many users do not verify the authenticity of images before sharing them. Google has committed to reinstating the feature only after implementing stronger protections, but did not provide a specific timeline for these changes.
