On Tuesday, Galaxy Digital unveiled its Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, which includes a commitment of up to $5 million for developer grants, a research initiative, and the formation of an advisory council to bolster the network against the impending threat of advanced quantum computers.
The company, traded on Nasdaq, outlined that this multifaceted initiative will support the development of post-quantum cryptographic solutions, provide analysis through Galaxy Research, and establish a Quantum Advisory Council with initial members such as Barry Sanders from the University of Calgary, Damien Bérubé, a MIT Sea Grant Knauss Fellow, and Eran Tromer, a computer science professor at Boston University. Galaxy indicated that it will begin accepting grant applications right away.
Mike Novogratz, Galaxy's founder and CEO, stated, "As leaders in the digital assets space, we believe it's important that we help be part of the solution to any potential threat quantum computing poses to Bitcoin."
The initiative focuses on the concept of "Q-Day," which refers to the moment when a quantum computer could potentially breach the elliptic curve cryptography that secures Bitcoin. By using Shor's algorithm, an attacker could derive a private key from a public key, fabricate a signature, and deplete a wallet without any on-chain indicators of fraud.
Wallets that utilize old or reused addresses are particularly vulnerable. Proposed defenses include transferring funds to quantum-resistant addresses and implementing new signature methods through proposals like BIP-360 and BIP-361, although these upgrades may take years to achieve due to Bitcoin's decentralized governance structure.
The launch of this initiative comes amid a growing alertness to the quantum threat. A report from Project Eleven released in May suggested that the emergence of a cryptographically capable quantum computer is likely by 2033, and potentially as soon as 2030, with an estimated 6.9 million Bitcoin residing in quantum-exposed wallets.
In June, the quantum advisory council of Coinbase urged developers to initiate migration efforts rather than delay, identifying approximately 7 million BTC as being at risk. During the same month, President Donald Trump signed two executive orders aimed at enhancing U.S. quantum capabilities and pushed the federal deadline for post-quantum cryptography to December 2031.
Recently, on July 16, Project Eleven introduced a method that would allow users to prove ownership of their wallets after Q-Day by demonstrating control of a parent key rather than relying on a signature. CEO Alex Pruden noted, "This provides a backup: ownership can be proven through derivation, not signatures, even after the critical window closes."
Galaxy emphasized that ensuring Bitcoin's readiness for quantum computing will necessitate a collaborative effort throughout the ecosystem.
