Flock Safety Launches Voluntary Layoff Program Amid Criticism

Flock Safety has launched a voluntary layoff program offering severance pay as a response to mounting criticism of its license plate recognition systems and the loss of key clients. This initiative, which began accepting applications on September 18 and will conclude on October 2, is anticipated to see most requests approved.

The severance package is touted as the "most generous" in the company’s history, with reports indicating that some employees are being offered tens of thousands of dollars, several months of health insurance, and the chance to sell their company shares within two years post-departure.

This move is seen as a reaction to the growing backlash against Flock's network of license plate reading cameras and the cancellation of multiple significant contracts. Since its inception in 2017, the firm has faced scrutiny from the public over privacy issues and concerns regarding potential misuse by law enforcement.

Additionally, several cities have severed ties with Flock, and there have been incidents of vandalism targeting the cameras, which have increased operational costs. A human rights organization in the Bay Area reported that 93 city and county authorities terminated contracts with the company in August alone.

Insiders suggest that some employees might take the layoff offer as discussions about a potential sale of the company surface. Earlier this summer, CEO Garrett Langley emphasized the need for a balance between privacy and security.
