The cryptocurrency super PAC Fairshake has announced a significant $30 million investment aimed at opposing Sherrod Brown's Senate campaign in Ohio, marking one of the largest expenditures from the industry for the 2026 elections. This move mirrors Fairshake's previous spending of $40 million to help defeat Brown in 2024, which was its highest expenditure at the time.
Strategic Spending in Ohio
Fairshake's current financial commitment is part of a broader strategy to influence the upcoming general elections, with the PAC reportedly holding nearly $100 million available for last-minute campaign efforts. The PAC's spending in Ohio is particularly noteworthy as it seeks to counter Brown’s return to the Senate, which could threaten the current Republican majority that has been favorable to crypto interests.
Brown’s critical stance on the crypto sector has long been a concern for industry supporters, including major players such as Coinbase, Ripple Labs, and a16z. The previous defeat of Brown paved the way for a more favorable Senate environment for crypto legislation, allowing significant progress on bills concerning stablecoin regulation and the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act.
However, a potential return of Brown does not guarantee he will reclaim his former leadership position on the Senate Banking Committee, currently held by Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is anticipated to lead if the Democrats regain control of the Senate.
Fairshake’s spokesperson, Geoff Vetter, confirmed the $30 million investment against Brown, emphasizing its significance as the largest single-candidate expenditure in this election cycle. Vetter also mentioned that further announcements regarding their campaign strategy would follow in the lead-up to the November 3 election.
Recent polling indicates a tight race, with 48% of likely Ohio voters supporting Brown and 45% favoring the Republican incumbent, Senator Jon Husted. Betting markets assign a 57% probability of victory to Brown.
In response to Fairshake's spending, Brown's campaign issued a statement from campaign manager Patrick Eisenhauer, accusing Husted of being influenced by wealthy donors: "Jon Husted's for sale and the billionaires and corporations pouring millions into this race know it."
Prior to this major commitment, Fairshake's second-largest financial backing was approximately $12 million for Barry Moore's nomination in the Alabama Senate primary. The PAC had also faced setbacks, including a $10 million expenditure that failed to block Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton's Senate primary bid.
Fairshake has maintained a mostly bipartisan approach in its funding strategies, although its larger investments have typically aimed at supporting Republican candidates or opposing Democrats as the Senate's future hangs in the balance. Despite previous successes in backing numerous congressional candidates, Fairshake's efforts have yet to secure the crypto industry's top policy goal, the Clarity Act. Nevertheless, the PAC continues to invest in pro-crypto candidates across party lines, often funding advertisements that do not explicitly reference cryptocurrency but focus on broader political messaging.
U.S. Supreme Court rulings have enabled PACs to spend unlimited amounts on political campaigns, allowing Fairshake to independently purchase advertisements outside the official campaigns of candidates, which are limited in their fundraising capabilities due to federal election laws.
