Coinbase has announced that it will revert the Base App's name back to Coinbase Wallet, emphasizing a renewed focus on trading across multiple blockchain networks rather than its earlier social networking goals.
According to Ryan Kass, head of product for Coinbase Wallet, this rebranding signifies the app's evolution into a multichain trading platform. The company believes that returning to the Coinbase Wallet name aligns better with its overarching strategy of being an “everything exchange.”

The introduction of perpetual futures on Hyperliquid, along with support for other networks like Solana and tokenized stocks, indicates Coinbase Wallet’s return to its original purpose as a platform for trading various assets quickly and efficiently, without abandoning its support for Base.

The reversion to Coinbase Wallet also revitalizes what the company refers to as its “test kitchen,” a space where new assets and experiences can be trialed beyond those available on Coinbase’s main exchange.
Although Coinbase and Robinhood are competing entities, Kass noted that both cannot afford to ignore each other’s ecosystems, asserting that providing a broad asset range and allowing users to choose their trading platform is crucial for attracting their business.
This pivot towards a more diverse trading offering across various blockchains follows a reassessment of the Base App’s social strategy. In July, Base creator Jesse Pollak stepped back from leading the app to concentrate on the Base blockchain, recognizing that the social features and creator coins did not achieve the expected adoption.
While social features may still have a role, the wallet will prioritize user demand over any specific model.
Despite the name change, Kass affirmed Coinbase's ongoing commitment to Base, with the wallet continuing to facilitate the network’s assets, communities, and features.
