Brent crude oil prices rose to $111.66, a five-month high, as global markets, particularly tech stocks, faced declines.
Oil Prices Reach Five-Month High Amid Market Turmoil
Brent crude oil prices surged by 2.6% to $111.66 per barrel, marking the highest level in five months. This increase comes as the stock markets experienced significant declines, particularly in technology sectors linked to artificial intelligence.
By mid-morning in New York, the Nasdaq index fell by 1.5%, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.8%. The decline in tech stocks is exemplified by Nvidia, which saw a 2.3% decrease in its share price, affecting many index funds and retirement accounts.
International markets also suffered, with South Korea's Kospi index declining by 3.52%, Japan's Nikkei 225 dropping by 2.65%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index falling by 3.03%. Notably, the CSI 300 in China entered a bear market, having declined over 20% from its recent peak.
The downturn in South Korea follows a dramatic 7.57% drop on October 15, labeled “Black Thursday,” which triggered a trading halt to curb panic selling. Currently, the Kospi remains more than 40% below its June highs.
Concerns over debt have also plagued companies like CoreWeave, which fell by 3.8% due to worries about its financial obligations tied to Nvidia chip acquisitions. Other companies, such as Meta and Lam Research, reported disappointing earnings, contributing to further market anxiety.
Ken Griffin, founder of Citadel, suggested that the market may be experiencing an AI bubble, drawing parallels between AI chips and airline seats that can lead to price collapses if supply exceeds demand. Despite his cautionary stance, he did not advise investors to sell.
The Federal Reserve is set to announce its next rate decision on October 28, with a 15% chance of an interest rate hike currently being priced in by the markets. Another increase in December is also anticipated, which could negatively impact investment costs.
Upcoming economic data, including core PCE inflation and payroll figures, will be closely monitored as they could influence future market conditions.
