Summary

  • Apple has developed a large language model for the Chinese market with assistance from Alibaba, as reported by Reuters.
  • This partnership may position Apple as the first foreign firm permitted to operate its own AI model in China.
  • Apple Intelligence is anticipated to be available to Chinese iPhones via an iOS update in the near future.

Apple has successfully trained a proprietary AI model aimed at the Chinese market, leveraging the expertise of Alibaba, according to a report from Reuters.

Sources familiar with the situation indicated that the Cyberspace Administration of China granted approval for Apple’s generative AI service last month, overcoming a significant regulatory barrier that has prevented the entry of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude in China.

In February 2025, Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai confirmed the collaboration between the two companies.

“They engaged with several companies in China,” Tsai stated at that time. “Ultimately, they decided to partner with us.”

As reported by Reuters, Apple intends to integrate its model with Alibaba’s Qwen and technology from Baidu. However, the specific roles of each system remain undefined; nonetheless, Apple Intelligence, the company's branded AI initiative, is expected to be rolled out to Chinese iPhones through an iOS update “in the coming months.”

This development follows a challenging year for Apple’s AI division.

In January, Apple announced that its forthcoming Foundation Models would utilize Google’s Gemini instead of a proprietary design, due to delays and lukewarm reception of Apple Intelligence.

In May, the company settled for $250 million regarding claims that it misled iPhone users about AI features that were not available at the time of launch. This delay has allowed Chinese competitors like Huawei to gain a lead with their AI-enabled smartphones.

In June, Apple introduced a revamped Siri AI, a newly designed assistant capable of engaging in conversations, analyzing images, and utilizing personal context. Apple announced that this assistant would enter beta testing later this year but would not be available in China until regulatory issues are resolved.
