Elon Musk Critiques Sam Altman's Views on DRAM Utilization
Elon Musk has publicly criticized OpenAI CEO Sam Altman for suggesting that the limited supply of DRAM should be allocated more efficiently, favoring AI data centers over personal home computers. This exchange occurred during an interview where Altman indicated that many home computers, which are used only 5% of the time, waste valuable memory resources.
In his remarks, Altman emphasized the need for better global memory allocation, arguing that current usage patterns are inefficient in a supply-constrained environment. He expressed concern that the push for local inference and open-source AI models might mislead users about the optimal use of resources.
Responding to Altman’s statements, Musk took to X, sharing a meme featuring Christoph Waltz's character from Inglourious Basterds, humorously accusing the public of "withholding DRAM from the cloud." He added, "The people deserve to have their RAM too!" illustrating his belief that consumers should retain access to their resources.
