AMD has announced an agreement to acquire the AI laboratory World Labs, led by renowned computer vision researcher Fei-Fei Li. The transaction is valued at approximately $8.2 billion in stock.
AMD Welcomes the "Godmother of AI"
Fei-Fei Li is a prominent figure in the artificial intelligence field, often referred to as the "godmother of AI" for her pivotal work on ImageNet—a vast dataset of labeled images that significantly advanced the development of computer vision and deep learning.
Upon completion of the acquisition, Li will join AMD along with her team from World Labs, taking on the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, directly reporting to AMD CEO Lisa Su.
Focusing on Spatial AI
World Labs specializes in creating spatial intelligence models capable of generating, reconstructing, and simulating interactive 3D environments based on text, images, and video. The lab is also developing technologies for training and simulating robots.
AMD aims to leverage the expertise of the World Labs team to gain insights into the evolving computational infrastructure requirements for reasoning models, robotics, simulations, and physical AI. This knowledge is expected to inform AMD's future hardware and software architecture developments.
Strengthening Competition with Nvidia
The acquisition is estimated at around $8.2 billion and will be financed through AMD stock. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
AMD and World Labs have previously collaborated on training and inference models using AMD GPUs. Earlier this year, AMD also participated in a $1 billion funding round for World Labs.
It's worth noting that in 2024, AMD acquired AI infrastructure developer ZT Systems for $4.9 billion.
