Alibaba, the Chinese tech giant, has launched its latest AI model, Qwen3.8-Max, which the company claims is the largest and most powerful in the Qwen lineup.

"With 2.4 trillion parameters and a context window of 1 million tokens, it is engineered for advanced programming, real-world tasks, deep research, and addressing complex long-term challenges," the announcement stated.
Developers have clarified that the AI model utilizes a sparse architecture known as Mixture-of-Experts, which allows it to distribute tasks among specialized blocks rather than activating the entire system for each request.
The team announced that the weights for Qwen3.8-Max will be made available to the public. In contrast, previous flagship Max models remained proprietary and were accessible only through Alibaba's cloud services.
This new model has achieved the highest ranking among Chinese text models on Arena.AI, falling just behind Claude Fable 5 and three variations of Claude Opus by Anthropic.

In the visual ranking on Arena.AI, the model secured the second position globally, with only Claude Fable 5 ahead of it.
The release of Qwen3.8-Max occurs amid a competitive landscape where Chinese AI developers are racing to create large models with open weights. In July, Moonshot AI launched Kimi K3, which boasts 2.8 trillion parameters, native image processing capabilities, and a context window of up to 1 million tokens.
Previously, Alibaba announced Qwen3.7-Max aimed at AI agents, along with a suite of AI models for robotics and physical tasks, known as Qwen-Robot Suite, which includes Qwen-RobotNav for navigation, Qwen-RobotManip for object manipulation, and Qwen-RobotWorld for scene progression prediction. The team described this initiative as a "full stack for embodied artificial intelligence."
It is noteworthy that in January, Alibaba Cloud's Qwen-3 became the first AI model in the world to be uploaded and operated in orbit.
