The entire development team of Zcash has left the Electric Coin Company due to internal disputes, prompting a significant market reaction.
The Electric Coin Company (ECC), responsible for Zcash's development, has seen its entire team leave due to internal conflicts, as disclosed by former CEO Josh Swihart.
Swihart noted that the majority of Bootstrap board members have diverged from the mission aimed at supporting Zcash.
The Bootstrap board, a nonprofit established to oversee ECC, includes members Zaki Manian, Christina Garman, Alan Fairless, and Michelle Lai. Swihart emphasized that the board's actions did not align with the cryptocurrency's privacy goals.
“The terms of our employment were altered, making it impossible for us to fulfill our responsibilities effectively,” he stated.
The departing developers intend to form a new company focused on the vision of creating "unstoppable private money," while ensuring the Zcash protocol remains unaffected and continues to function normally.
“This decision was made to safeguard our work from management actions that obstructed the original mission of ECC,” Swihart explained.
Market Reaction
The announcement triggered a significant drop in Zcash's price, which fell over 10% within 24 hours. As of January 8, 2026, ZEC was trading at $394, down from a peak of $720 in November.
Despite the downturn, Mert Mumtaz, co-founder of Helius Labs, described the situation as a "bullish signal," predicting Zcash could soar to $10,000.
“The most competent people in Zcash are now liberated from the inefficiencies of foundation politics,”
Experts from a16z crypto have identified privacy as a key trend for the cryptocurrency market in 2026, a sentiment echoed by entrepreneur Balaji Srinivasan and Coinbase Ventures.
