A study reveals that many young adults engage with AI romantic companions while keeping it a secret from their partners, raising concerns about relationship dynamics.
Study Highlights Secrecy in AI Companion Use Among Young Adults
A recent study from Brigham Young University, the Institute for Family Studies, and the Wheatley Institute reveals that 15% of partnered U.S. adults aged 18 to 30 regularly engage with AI romantic companions, often keeping this behavior hidden from their significant others.
The report, titled "Secret Soulmates," surveyed 2,431 young adults in committed relationships and found that over half of the frequent users, specifically 69%, believe it is important for their partners to remain unaware of the extent of their AI interactions.
Interestingly, nearly 30% of these users reported that their partners had no knowledge of their AI companionship, while an additional 11% indicated their partners were only somewhat aware. This secrecy suggests a significant divide in communication regarding digital intimacy.
Researchers observed a concerning trend: regular use of AI companions correlates with lower relationship stability and communication quality. Frequent users were 46% less likely to report stable relationships and 40% less likely to have high-quality communication with their partners. Despite these issues, users reported feeling more comfortable expressing their emotions to AI companions, with 68% stating it was easier to do so compared to real-life relationships.
Moreover, the study highlighted that married individuals are more likely to engage with AI companions than those who are dating, with over 17% of married young adults using these platforms. While men showed a higher tendency to engage with AI, more than 10% of women in relationships also reported regular interactions with AI companions.
The rise of AI romantic companions has been linked to the concept of "digisexuality," a term that encompasses romantic relationships formed primarily through technology. As AI chatbots evolve to provide more interactive experiences, users increasingly view them as emotional partners. Online communities, such as r/AIRelationships on Reddit, reflect this growing trend, where individuals share their experiences of engaging with AI as companions.
Despite the increasing prevalence of AI companionship, the degree of secrecy surrounding its use raises questions about the implications for real-life relationships. The researchers noted that many users might be reluctant to discuss their AI interactions due to embarrassment or fear of their partner's reaction, leading to a hidden aspect of their romantic lives.
