The World Foundation has announced a fundraising achievement of $52.5 million to further develop World ID, Sam Altman's initiative for establishing a "proof of human" system. This move comes as the necessity for validating human identity becomes increasingly significant in the face of a growing number of AI agents online, according to the nonprofit's statement on Friday.
Pantera Capital led the initial token sale, which also attracted investment from Bain Capital Crypto, Nasdaq-listed Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto. All WLD tokens sold during this round are locked for a year. The funds will be utilized to expand World ID's reach to various organizations, consumers, and their AI counterparts. Cosmo Jiang, a general partner at Pantera, remarked that the "need for Proof of Human is becoming acutely clear" as AI technology evolves rapidly.
Understanding World ID
World ID allows individuals to validate their uniqueness as humans without disclosing their identities, achieved through a one-time iris scan at a device known as the Orb, which generates an ID stored on the user's phone. The initiative, which has been rebranded from Worldcoin in 2024, was co-founded by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, with the goal of creating a global system for "proof of personhood." This technology is set to integrate with platforms such as Zoom, Docusign, Okta, Vercel, and Tinder this year, alongside the launch of an enterprise-focused version, World ID 4.0, enabling external developers to incorporate their credentials into the platform.
This fundraising coincides with the project's third anniversary, during which more than 39 million individuals have registered in the network, with 18 million verified via the Orb, and a total of 475 million ID proofs processed, as reported by the Foundation.
Regulatory Challenges and Growing Interest
World's iris-scanning approach has faced scrutiny and regulatory challenges in several countries due to concerns over biometric data management. In 2024, Hong Kong ordered the cessation of its operations; a court in Kenya mandated the deletion of users' biometric information; and Brazil prohibited it from compensating individuals for iris scans. Spain has also attempted to stop data collection, while South Korea imposed an $830,000 fine for privacy violations.
Despite these challenges, interest from institutional investors continues to rise. Eightco, one of the investors from Friday's funding, established the first corporate WLD treasury last year, and Grayscale recently filed for the inaugural U.S. ETF linked to the token.
