  • Federal authorities are pursuing the forfeiture of over $25 million in cryptocurrency through five civil cases.
  • These funds are associated with fraudulent investment schemes, romance scams, and a recovery scam targeting a previous victim.
  • This initiative adds to the more than $800 million that a federal task force has reportedly recovered.

U.S. federal prosecutors have initiated five civil forfeiture cases aimed at reclaiming more than $25 million in cryptocurrency believed to be linked to international scams involving romance and investments that targeted individuals in the United States and Canada.

These complaints were submitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and are based on independent investigations by the Secret Service.

Investigators traced the funds through numerous wallet addresses, uncovering crypto associated with over 270 suspected investment scams, more than 200 victims of romance scams, and several individuals in the Washington area, as stated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The largest claims include approximately $12.1 million related to online romance scams and about $10.4 million connected to fraudulent investment schemes. Three additional claims are for around $1.23 million, $2.39 million, and $285,000.

In one instance, scammers severed communication after a victim attempted to withdraw funds from what seemed to be a crypto investment account. In another case, fraudsters reached out to an individual who had already suffered financial loss, claiming they could assist in recovering the funds for a fee, a tactic known as a recovery scam.

These cases are part of the Scam Center Strike Force, which was launched in November 2025. The U.S. Attorney’s Office reported that the task force has successfully recovered over $800 million.
