MarketsU.S. Dollar Reaches 18-Month Peak as Bitcoin Stabilizes Around $86,000

A rising dollar and increasing bond yields are challenging Bitcoin’s stability amid fiscal worries in France and political instability in Spain impacting the euro.

  • The DXY hit approximately 102.5 on Monday, marking an 18-month high.
  • The euro dropped to a 17-month low against the dollar amid heightened political uncertainty from Spain's snap elections.
  • Bitcoin remains steady around $86,000 despite tightening financial conditions.

While major currencies generally exhibit less volatility compared to stocks or cryptocurrencies, shifts in monetary policy and investor sentiment can lead to significant fluctuations.

The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), which evaluates the dollar against a selection of six primary currencies, reached about 102.5 on Monday, its highest level in nearly 18 months. It has risen from around 99 at the beginning of September, now comfortably above its 200-day moving average, which is also near 99, indicating a solid bullish trend.

A robust dollar often poses challenges for risk assets, as it increases the cost of servicing dollar-denominated debt for entities outside the U.S. and diminishes the purchasing power of foreign investors. Coupled with rising U.S. interest rates, it also enhances the appeal of cash and government bonds, setting a higher bar for investments in stocks and Bitcoin BTC$86,065.58.

The Federal Reserve's decision in September to raise interest rates by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75% to 4% has bolstered the dollar's strength. Market expectations indicate further tightening, with a target range of 4.5% to 4.75% likely by June 2027. This rise in Treasury yields coincides with concerns about inflation, government borrowing, and fiscal sustainability, with long-term U.S. yields reaching levels not seen in over twenty years.

The euro's decline significantly impacts the DXY, as it represents 57.6% of the index. The euro has fallen to around 1.12, a 17-month low, due to escalating fiscal and political issues undermining confidence. France is facing mounting pressure regarding its deficit and borrowing costs ahead of the upcoming presidential election. Simultaneously, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced a snap election for November 29, which adds to the regional uncertainty.

Despite these challenges, Bitcoin continues to trade around $86,000 after a strong start to October.
