Texas brothers sentenced to a combined 326 months for a violent home invasion that netted over $8 million in cryptocurrency.
Severe Sentences for Violent Robbery
Two Texas brothers, Raymond and Isiah Garcia, received lengthy prison sentences totaling 326 months for their involvement in a violent home invasion that resulted in the theft of over $8 million in cryptocurrency from a Minnesota family. U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank sentenced Raymond to 180 months and Isiah to 186 months, reflecting the serious nature of their crimes.
Details of the Crime
The incident occurred on September 19, 2025, when the Garcia brothers traveled from Waller, Texas, to Grant, Minnesota. They broke into the victim's home, zip-tied the family, and held them at gunpoint for more than nine hours, demanding access to the father's crypto accounts. When the victim was unable to transfer the expected amount, they forced him to drive to a cabin to retrieve additional hardware wallets, ultimately leading to the transfer of more than $8 million in cryptocurrency.
The brothers fled after the victim's son managed to call 911 and were later apprehended near Houston.
“The Garcia brothers committed a brazen and calculated act of violence against the victim and his family,” stated U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen. “They violated the sanctity of a home,” added FBI agent Christopher Dotson.
Rising Trend of Crypto Crimes
This case highlights the increasing prevalence of “wrench attacks,” where criminals resort to physical violence rather than hacking to steal cryptocurrency. Reports indicate a surge in such incidents, with Chainalysis documenting 46 violent events and over $30 million stolen in early 2026 alone. The trend underscores the serious risks associated with holding substantial amounts of crypto, as this case exemplifies the lengths to which criminals will go.
The sentences handed down to the Garcia brothers signal a growing recognition among U.S. courts that violent crimes related to cryptocurrency will be treated with the utmost seriousness, setting a precedent for future cases.
