Elon Musk and Binance's CZ in Public Dispute

Changpeng Zhao, co-founder of Binance, publicly confronted Elon Musk after the billionaire appeared to mock the exchange in light of its recent $6.4 billion hack, the largest in cryptocurrency history. Zhao, often referred to as CZ, reminded Musk of Binance's substantial holdings in SpaceX shares, valued at over $1 billion, and urged him to stop the mockery.

In a message on social media platform X, CZ expressed his respect for Musk but emphasized that it was not the time for jokes. He stated, "Elon, have a lot of respect for you, but bad time to troll. Please stop." He further clarified that Binance's revenue for the year is sufficient to cover the losses incurred from the hack without needing to liquidate their SpaceX shares.

Binance's Financial Position and Response

Binance has set aside more than $6.34 billion from its own funds to address the fallout from the attack, which has been linked to the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor, as reported by blockchain analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis. The hack involved the theft of significant amounts of cryptocurrency from wallets tied to Binance across various blockchains.

Despite the massive loss, Binance maintains that it can cover the damages without resorting to selling off its SpaceX investments. Zhao later indicated that he was simply trying to reassure Musk about Binance's financial health, and he had not suggested selling the shares.

Details of the Hack and Market Impact

The hack, which occurred on October 29, saw $6.4 billion in cryptocurrency stolen, with initial reports indicating that around $5.57 billion was moved from wallets associated with Binance. The attackers utilized decentralized exchanges and protocols to convert and transfer the stolen funds, complicating recovery efforts.

In response to the incident, Tether and Circle, operators of the USDT and USDC stablecoins, froze approximately $2.39 billion in assets linked to the attackers. This situation has highlighted vulnerabilities in the recovery of stolen cryptocurrency, especially regarding assets like Ethereum that cannot be frozen by a central authority.
