Tesla's Profit Decline
Tesla has reported a substantial 43% decline in its net income for the third quarter, falling to $787 million from $1.37 billion in the same period last year. This drop comes despite flat revenue of $28.05 billion, as the company significantly increased its spending on research and development, which rose 69% to $2.76 billion. Additionally, capital expenditures more than doubled to $4.73 billion, reflecting the company's focus on new technologies.
Investments in Robotics and Autonomous Vehicles
The increased spending is primarily directed towards two ambitious projects: the Optimus humanoid robot and the Cybercab, Tesla's driverless taxi. The production of Optimus has commenced at the Fremont, California factory, with CEO Elon Musk setting a target of 20,000 units per week, although he anticipates that achieving this goal will take at least a year. Deliveries to external customers are expected around the end of 2027.
On the driverless cab front, Tesla is aiming to introduce Cybercabs to customers by the end of 2026, pending a federal safety audit. Tesla has already begun building Cybercabs, which are currently designated for its own fleet, with Musk indicating that most will be retained for use in a "transport as a service" model.
