Summary

  • Bitcoin's recent rise to approximately $79,007 has boosted the value of Strategy's 840,447 BTC to about $66.4 billion, reflecting a 4.4% increase from its average purchase price of $75,653.
  • Michael Saylor celebrated this recovery with a post saying, "We're Back," which has led to speculation about potential new purchases; the company has not added to its Bitcoin holdings in nearly two months.
  • Strategy has recently raised $334 million from selling MSTR stock while maintaining its Bitcoin holdings, and has even sold small quantities to fund dividends and buybacks.

Michael Saylor's Strategy has regained paper profits as a recent surge in Bitcoin prices has elevated the value of its substantial holdings above their acquisition cost.

On Sunday, Bitcoin reached around $79,007, marking a 1% daily increase according to CoinGecko. Consequently, the value of Strategy's 840,447 BTC is estimated at roughly $66.4 billion, which translates to a 4.4% gain over the firm's average purchase price of $75,653, resulting in profits exceeding $2.8 billion.

In the early hours of Sunday, Saylor posted a chart on X accompanied by the phrase "We're Back," signaling a possible resurgence in buying activity.

This upswing caps off a tumultuous few months for the firm. A five-day rally reversed a significant downturn that had left Strategy's holdings around $13 billion in the red in July, when Bitcoin prices dipped to roughly $58,000. The recovery has coincided with Bitcoin's rise from about $62,000 to the upper $70,000s this month, driven by substantial inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs and a weakening dollar.

Saylor's optimistic message has sparked social media speculation that Strategy may soon resume its Bitcoin purchases. The company usually announces its weekly Bitcoin acquisitions on Monday mornings, and Saylor's posts have historically hinted at such disclosures.

It is noteworthy that Strategy has not increased its holdings in about two months, which is unusual for a company that has aggressively built its Bitcoin portfolio under Saylor's "never sell" philosophy.

This pause indicates a strategic shift. Recently, the company raised $334 million by selling MSTR stock without liquidating its Bitcoin assets, part of a broader transition to what it refers to as a capital-management framework.

Additionally, Strategy has sold small amounts of Bitcoin in recent months to support preferred dividends and buybacks, a notable departure from its previous buy-and-hold strategy.

Any potential new purchases would occur in a volatile market. Bitcoin dipped to as low as $76,877 on Friday following comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, who cautioned that inflation is not decreasing quickly enough, leading to increased expectations for a September rate hike.

Despite the gains, Bitcoin remains significantly below its record high of nearly $126,000 from October, indicating that Strategy's profits are modest relative to the peak.

Saylor did not provide any indication in his post regarding the timing of a potential purchase.
