Authorities in Gangwon Province, South Korea, have charged 26 individuals associated with the prediction market Polymarket for engaging in illegal gambling. Reports indicate that 18 of these cases have been escalated to the prosecutor's office. Investigators claim that these users placed bets totaling approximately 17.6 billion won, equivalent to around $12.7 million. Notably, the largest single wager was reported at 5.7 billion won, or roughly $4.1 million. The police consider the "yes/no" betting structure on Polymarket contracts as a form of unlawful gambling, asserting that participants do not have any influence over the outcomes. The accused, however, characterize the platform as a cryptocurrency derivatives exchange.
