Solana Unveils Alpenglow Upgrade
Solana has officially launched its Alpenglow consensus protocol, marking the most significant upgrade since the network's inception in 2020. The new protocol, which replaces the TowerBFT system, significantly reduces the time for transactions to become irreversible from approximately 12.8 seconds to just 150 milliseconds, according to core developer Anza.
Details of the Upgrade
The transition to Alpenglow occurred at slot 459,653,000 on October 21, with validators successfully retiring TowerBFT while maintaining the existing ledger. This upgrade will enhance finality—the point at which transactions can no longer be reversed—streamlining the process for exchanges and financial institutions.
"This is the largest, most ambitious blockchain upgrade since 'The Merge,'" said Brennan Watt, CEO of Anza, highlighting the rapid development from concept to deployment in under 18 months.
Prior to its mainnet launch, Alpenglow underwent extensive public testing, including security assessments and rehearsals. Anza's research team, led by ETH Zurich professor Roger Wattenhofer, introduced the design in May 2025, ensuring a robust implementation.
