Samsung Wallet Launches USDC Accounts

Samsung Wallet has officially introduced stablecoin accounts for eligible U.S. Galaxy users, enabling transactions with Circle’s USDC on the Solana blockchain. This new feature is accessible to approximately 82 million Galaxy devices in the U.S.

Partnerships and Features

The service, developed in collaboration with custodian Bastion and Coinbase, allows users to buy, hold, send, and receive USDC without incurring Samsung transfer fees. Users can also send funds to bank accounts in over 60 countries, although fees may apply based on the destination.

Credit card top-ups will incur a 4% fee, and the service is currently unavailable in New York. Samsung is also looking into expanding stablecoin payment options in both online and physical retail environments, contingent on local regulations.

Industry Impact

Lily Liu, president of the Solana Foundation, highlighted the significance of this launch, stating, "For a decade, stablecoins have proved the technology works. What they lacked was a way to reach the mainstream." Samsung’s digital wallet team leader, Woncheol Chai, emphasized the aim to simplify money transfers globally using stablecoins, providing a user-friendly experience without the complexities of traditional crypto tools.

The feature was initially announced on October 7, after Samsung's plans to integrate USDC were first hinted at during the summer. The accounts function as crypto wallets rather than traditional bank accounts, reinforcing the innovative shift towards integrating digital currencies in everyday financial transactions.
