Summary

  • Robinhood Chain has nearly $800 million in total value locked just one month post-launch.
  • The platform has successfully completed over 200 million transactions.
  • Robinhood aims to attract users who are new to cryptocurrency rather than vying for existing market participants.

Robinhood Chain aspires to serve as a financial center for both traditional investors and crypto enthusiasts.

This vision aligns with Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev’s analogy of “two wolves,” which the company’s crypto lead, Johann Kerbrat, interprets as a quest for equilibrium between substantial financial products—such as tokenized stocks and derivatives—and the playful memes that captivate and engage users.

“We want to demonstrate to customers that we are invested in what they value,” Kerbrat remarked in an interview with Decrypt. “Our goal is to ensure the chain aligns with what matters to people.”

And the results are promising.

In just over a month, Robinhood Chain has amassed almost $800 million in total value locked and has processed more than 200 million transactions, according to Kerbrat.

In a recent exclusive discussion with FOMO Hour, Kerbrat, who oversees Robinhood’s crypto and international divisions, explained that the choice of an Ethereum layer-2 solution was strategic, allowing the company to leverage existing security and decentralization while directing efforts toward product development.

He highlighted the chain’s deposit figures and transaction volume as early indicators of its market acceptance.

“We are also closely monitoring developer engagement, which is crucial to me,” he stated. “I envision this chain as not merely a Robinhood platform, but a space where anyone can engage with our offerings, including stock tokens and other innovations.”

The Robinhood Chain is part of the firm’s broader initiative to transition brokerage services onto the blockchain. Users can buy and sell real-world assets, trade around 200 tokenized stocks, lend stablecoins, and engage in perpetual futures trading.

Kerbrat noted that the ability to trade outside traditional market hours provides retail investors a means to react to significant news events when conventional exchanges are closed.

“The world doesn’t pause on weekends,” he commented. “News can break on Fridays after the market closes, and investors want the option to hedge their positions, which has typically been unavailable to retail traders until recently.”

In addition to tokenized stocks and lending options, Kerbrat emphasized that Robinhood is also accommodating meme coins, which he sees as a vital source of liquidity and user engagement for the new platform.

“We believe memes are a significant aspect of the crypto landscape. For a nascent chain like Robinhood Chain, these tokens hold value as they drive liquidity and attract customers, particularly those interested in DeFi, who can be challenging to engage,” stated Kerbrat.

“If meme coins are of great interest to our users, we want to ensure the chain supports that,” he added.

Ultimately, Kerbrat expressed that Robinhood’s goal is to reach individuals who have yet to explore cryptocurrency rather than compete with other blockchains for the same users.

“If we attract tens of millions of customers to use our chain, I would consider that a significant success,” he concluded. “Our aim is to onboard more users to the chain and demonstrate the advantages of the technology.”
