PlayStation's Shift Away from Physical Discs Sparks Controversy
Ken Kutaragi, the founder of PlayStation, has responded to the backlash over Sony's announcement to halt the production of physical game discs by 2028, labeling the uproar a "mentality issue." This decision has triggered significant discontent among gamers, prompting over 385,000 signatures on a petition titled "Don't Kill the Disc."
During a recent event, Kutaragi acknowledged the emotional connection many gamers have with physical discs, describing them as a "metaphor" for ownership in the gaming world. He stated, "I understand that physical discs have become a metaphor for 'owning' games. But nobody thinks [physical media] is necessary for a networked device like a smartphone... So it's a mentality."
Industry experts suggest that the move to eliminate physical discs primarily benefits publishers by improving profit margins and reducing production costs. Robert Bowling, a former creative strategist at Infinity Ward, emphasized that the push for discontinuing discs is driven by publishers seeking to maximize profits, which also impacts the resale market.
