  • Petrobras is using Cardano blockchain technology in two research initiatives designed to monitor the environmental claims associated with sustainable aviation fuel and its renewable Diesel R.
  • The aviation project seeks to prevent double counting of emissions reductions, while the diesel initiative aims to document the complete lifecycle of the fuel for accurate emissions reporting.
  • Both initiatives are currently in the research phase, with no set timeline for broader implementation or specifics on the volumes of fuel involved.

Petrobras, Brazil's state-owned oil and gas company, is exploring the Cardano blockchain to enhance transparency regarding lower-carbon fuel claims, as detailed in two research projects unveiled by the Cardano Foundation and shared with CoinDesk.

One project focuses on sustainable aviation fuel, a greener substitute for traditional jet fuel that can be utilized in existing aircraft and airport infrastructures. The second project involves Diesel R, a type of diesel produced by Petrobras that incorporates renewable resources like vegetable oils and animal fats.

“Brazil has been one of the most consistent adopters of Cardano, from SERPRO in government to SENAI in industry. It's great to see Petrobras, one of the largest firms in the region, continue to see value in on-chain provenance and traceability,” noted Frederik Gregaard, CEO of the Cardano Foundation, in a statement to CoinDesk.

He added, “Institutional interest in Cardano keeps growing, especially with x402 arriving on Cardano and Fireblocks adding support for Cardano Native Tokens. It's never been a better time for enterprises to consider what this technology offers.”

The aviation initiative addresses a significant challenge in the sale of green fuel, known as the book-and-claim model, which allows airlines to pay for the environmental benefits of sustainable fuel even if the actual fuel is consumed elsewhere. This requires a meticulous record to track who claims the benefit and when, ensuring that no two companies can claim the same emissions reduction.

Using Cardano, the project will chronicle the origin of each benefit, the recipient, and the timing of the claims, thereby preventing double counting of emissions reductions.

In practical terms, a passenger can input their departure and arrival airports to calculate the associated fuel benefit and receive certification linking their allocation back to the original fuel certificate.

Conversely, the diesel initiative aims to compile data throughout the entire production, transportation, and usage process, creating a comprehensive history of the fuel's journey.

This could be instrumental for companies in reporting Scope 3 emissions, which refer to indirect emissions throughout their supply chain and customer interactions, where necessary data often resides with other entities.

Both projects are still in the research phase. The diesel model is described as proposed, and the announcement did not specify the volumes of fuel involved or a timeline for broader implementation.

Additionally, Cardano has recently joined the x402 payment standard, which enables applications and AI agents to request payments for data or computation services. The initial payment-processing software has undergone testing on Cardano's pre-production network, but commercial application on the live blockchain is still pending verification.
