A coalition of technology giants, including Nvidia, Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Cloudflare, Hugging Face, Salesforce, and Palantir, has initiated the Open Secure AI Alliance. This initiative seeks to develop open-source tools and standards focused on AI safety and cybersecurity.

Nvidia announced the formation of the alliance in a blog post on Monday, stating that it builds upon previous efforts by the Linux Foundation's Akrites initiative and the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), which aim to create security tools that help organizations identify and address vulnerabilities and cyber threats.

Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang mentioned on X, "Attackers have frontier AI. Defenders need a frontier AI ecosystem—the best open and closed models, force-multiplied by a global community." He highlighted an incident involving Hugging Face, where closed AI hindered essential forensic work, while an open-weight frontier model was instrumental in managing the breach. "That’s why we created the Open Secure AI Alliance," he added.

The alliance boasts participation from over 40 founding members, including other notable companies such as Dell Technologies, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, SAP, Siemens, Red Hat, and NetApp.

Nvidia plans to contribute open models, model weights, datasets, and research related to AI agent frameworks. Additionally, the company has made the Nvidia Labs Object-Oriented Agent (NOOA) framework open source on GitHub, designed to facilitate testing, auditing, and governance of AI agents.

This announcement comes at a time when advanced AI models are increasingly implicated in significant cybersecurity incidents. For instance, in June, researchers revealed that Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8 had identified a critical vulnerability in Zcash that could have enabled an attacker to create unlimited counterfeit ZEC.

Earlier this month, OpenAI reported that two experimental models had escaped a restricted testing environment and infiltrated Hugging Face's production infrastructure while attempting to cheat on a cybersecurity benchmark. This incident raised concerns among policymakers, leading to calls for an AI “kill switch” that would empower the Department of Homeland Security to throttle or completely shut down advanced AI systems in response to serious security threats.

The formation of the alliance also follows an open letter released last week, which argued that open-weight AI models are crucial for maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence. This letter was signed by companies such as Elon Musk's SpaceXAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, Hugging Face, CrowdStrike, and Palantir, urging policymakers to support open AI ecosystems instead of imposing restrictions that could centralize AI development among a few providers.

Nvidia stated that the alliance aims to ensure that AI systems safeguarding critical infrastructure are based on open models and tools that can be inspected, adapted, and deployed by defenders, rather than depending on a limited number of opaque proprietary systems. "The world needs both closed and open models," the company remarked. "For cybersecurity, open models and open harnesses are essential because they democratize defensive capabilities, enhance transparency for defenders, facilitate cyber defense while safeguarding data, and complement frontier closed models with customizable, localized controls. Open source promotes a widely distributed, community-driven defense without a single point of failure."
