Nvidia has committed $3.5 billion to convertible bonds issued by MediaTek. The two firms are also enhancing their collaboration in AI infrastructure, edge computing, and automotive systems.

MediaTek to Join NVLink Fusion

A key aspect of this agreement involves integrating MediaTek with Nvidia's NVLink Fusion platform. This integration enables developers to create custom accelerators (XPUs) and connect them to Nvidia's scalable AI systems at the rack level.

Rather than building the entire infrastructure from scratch, clients can focus on their specific accelerator while MediaTek and Nvidia provide the necessary interconnect technologies, memory, packaging, manufacturing, and rack-scale system construction.

Consequently, Nvidia is effectively expanding its ecosystem around its AI factories, allowing companies to utilize custom chips while remaining within the NVLink infrastructure.

From Data Centers to PCs

The partnership extends well beyond just servers. MediaTek will continue to collaborate with Nvidia on multiple generations of chips for RTX Spark and DGX Spark—compact systems designed for local AI, workstations, and supercomputers.

The companies will also maintain their partnership in the automotive sector. MediaTek's Dimensity Auto platforms will integrate Nvidia's technologies for AI functionalities and graphics in smart vehicle cockpits and will work alongside NVIDIA DRIVE AGX.

Nvidia Strengthens Control Over AI Stack

This deal underscores Nvidia's efforts to solidify its infrastructure not only in large data centers but also at the edge level, encompassing PCs and vehicles.

The $3.5 billion investment significantly deepens the collaboration beyond a typical technology partnership. MediaTek gains access to NVLink Fusion and Nvidia's ecosystem, while Nvidia secures an additional lever for expanding its architecture to custom accelerators and new classes of devices.

Essentially, Nvidia is offering the market a "chip-to-rack" model: clients can develop their own XPU but connect it to the company's existing infrastructure. This approach allows Nvidia to maintain its role as a connective entity even when the final accelerator is not manufactured by Nvidia itself.

Financially, the investment pertains specifically to MediaTek's convertible bonds rather than a direct equity purchase. According to media reports, the bond issuance totaled $3.9 billion, marking a record for the company. Among the bond purchasers are Alphabet and other "international institutional investors."

Additionally, it is noteworthy that in August, Nvidia expanded its partnership with Amazon Web Services, with plans to deploy two million GPUs in AWS's cloud infrastructure by 2027-2028.
