New York officials have announced a one-year moratorium on the use of generative AI by students from preschool through eighth grade. This restriction will affect nearly 600,000 students and is set to take effect in the 2026/27 academic year.

Companion chatbots will be prohibited across all grades, including high school. However, limited pilot programs featuring five educational AI tools will be introduced for high school students, alongside mandatory modules on AI literacy. Teachers will be permitted to utilize artificial intelligence for lesson planning and administrative tasks.
