Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's AI Startup for $587 Million

Netflix has acquired Ben Affleck's AI startup, InterPositive, for approximately $587 million, as reported by Variety following a filing with the SEC. The acquisition was finalized in March.

Following the deal, Affleck has taken on the role of senior advisor at Netflix, and the startup's team, comprising 16 developers and creative professionals, has transitioned to the streaming giant.

Ben Affleck remarked, “From the invention of moving pictures to the shift to digital solutions… technology has evolved alongside the artists who use it.”

Founded in 2022, InterPositive specializes in tools that enhance the training of large language models using filmed content and streamline post-production tasks such as mixing, lighting, and visual effects application. The startup has previously worked on commercial videos, music videos, and significant video projects.

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos indicated that around 300 projects set to launch in 2026 will incorporate some generative AI technologies. He noted that while the partnership with InterPositive is in its infancy, Netflix is already observing beneficial outcomes, including a notable increase in production efficiency.

For instance, Sarandos highlighted the documentary series The American Experiment, where AI integration accelerated production timelines and reduced costs. He clarified that Netflix's goal is not to replace human workers with AI solutions.

Additionally, it's important to mention that the Oscars' organizing body updated its rules in May, barring nominations for films created with AI involvement.
