Microsoft has launched a new app called OneDrive Photos, now available on select Windows 11 PCs, aimed at enhancing photo management through advanced AI features.

AI-Driven Features and Facial Recognition

This application automatically organizes local photo libraries and introduces AI-powered search capabilities, including an optional facial recognition feature. Users can find images using natural language queries and optical character recognition, even without a Microsoft account. Once logged in, users can access these advanced search functionalities.

Privacy Considerations

The app also includes a People component that groups photos of similar faces, which is designed for personal use only and can be deleted by disabling the feature. Participation in facial recognition is voluntary, and Microsoft acknowledges that facial data may be considered biometric information in certain jurisdictions.

Integration with OneDrive

The OneDrive Photos app is integrated into the existing OneDrive client and cannot be removed separately; users must uninstall OneDrive to eliminate the app entirely. This rollout is part of Microsoft's broader strategy to incorporate AI technologies into its operating systems.

This update follows a previous privacy concern that led Microsoft to revise its AI Recall feature, changing its default settings to user opt-in. Meanwhile, Google is also implementing AI features through updates to its Chrome browser, raising similar privacy concerns among users.
