Kraken Co-CEO Arjun Sethi. (Jesse Hamilton/CoinDesk)- Kraken has introduced USD-settled bitcoin and ether options on Kraken Pro, initially available through a request-for-quote (RFQ) system, with plans for a European launch later.
- The crypto options market is still developing, as current offerings are mainly tailored for institutional investors, leaving retail traders underserved.
- The exchange aims to enhance its offerings with an order book, wider global access, and more asset options.
Kraken has debuted cash-settled options for bitcoin BTC$64,454.43 and ether (ETH), marking the beginning of a broader initiative to expand the crypto options landscape rather than merely competing within it.
On Thursday, the exchange unveiled European-style, USD-settled options for bitcoin and ether on Kraken Pro, initially accessible to qualified international clients outside Europe, North America, and Australia, with plans for a European rollout to follow.
Alexia Theodorou, Kraken's derivatives director, highlighted that the crypto options market is underutilized compared to traditional finance, where options represent a much larger portion of derivatives trading.
"Crypto options activity is still a small fraction of what it is in traditional markets, but the gap is closing as professional and institutional capital continues to move into digital assets," Theodorou stated in an interview with CoinDesk.
The timing of Kraken's launch coincides with growing competition in the crypto derivatives sector, as various exchanges and traditional financial institutions strive to broaden their offerings in response to rising institutional interest.
While derivatives make up the majority of crypto trading volumes, options represent a smaller niche dominated by a few established players like Deribit, CME Group, and Binance. New market entrants are increasingly optimistic that the adoption of options will grow alongside the institutionalization of digital assets.
This initiative forms part of Kraken's evolution from a crypto exchange to a more comprehensive financial platform that includes trading, payments, and various digital asset services.
Expanding the Market, Not Just Market Share
Rather than solely focusing on capturing market share from existing competitors, Theodorou sees a larger opportunity in increasing the overall market by simplifying options for traders.
"The current options market in crypto has been designed for a narrow segment of the trading population," Theodorou explained.
"Our offering expands accessibility through a simple, dollar-settled contract within the same account clients already utilize for spot and futures trading," she added.
Retail-Focused Strategy
Theodorou believes that the slow uptake of crypto options is more about product design than about demand.
“The gap in crypto options isn't demand, it's design,” she remarked.
She pointed out that most existing crypto options platforms have catered primarily to institutional traders and market makers, while retail traders have favored perpetual futures due to their relative simplicity, which has made them the dominant speculative product in the industry.
Kraken's offering aims to reduce barriers with straightforward, USD-settled contracts that eliminate the need for managing crypto collateral or settlements. Premiums, profits, losses, and settlements will all be in U.S. dollars.
The exchange has also integrated options into the unified account clients use for spot and futures, enabling portfolio margining by default, which allows for offsetting positions across products to minimize collateral needs, and clients can post collateral in over 30 currencies.
Theodorou noted that the company has heavily invested in enhancing the trading interface, including educational resources to help traders grasp strategies such as calls, puts, and multi-leg positions.
"Options are crucial for how sophisticated investors position themselves regarding price, volatility, and time," she said. "Bringing this capability to Kraken Pro continues the development of a comprehensive derivatives platform alongside spot and futures, offering clients a single venue to express directional views and manage risk."
Next Steps in Europe
This launch represents a significant phase in Kraken's options strategy.
Future developments are anticipated to include a public order book for improved price discovery, wider geographic reach, and support for additional assets.
Europe is targeted for the next major expansion, according to Theodorou, who mentioned that Kraken already possesses the necessary regulatory approvals to offer crypto derivatives in that region.
