According to a report from local station KWCH, a high school physics teacher in Kansas was arrested after showing support for opponents of a planned AI data center at a city commission meeting.
Lux Claridge, who teaches at Emporia High School, was handcuffed after he applauded multiple times in favor of a speaker who criticized the proposed 1,000-acre Flint Hills Digital Campus.
Prior to the meeting, the Emporia city commission had informed attendees that clapping, snapping fingers, and similar actions would be deemed disruptive. Following a final warning, police escorted Claridge out of the venue as the meeting proceeded.
"I'm glad to be out—but this is an inconvenience, really," Claridge stated to KWCH after being released on bail. "It's not really deterring me from speaking out or, I guess, clapping."
The Emporia Police Department affirmed its commitment to maintaining orderly public meetings while also respecting the rights of residents to engage in civic activities. Claridge intends to plead not guilty at his court appearance scheduled for September.
“This isn’t going to hold up in court. Lux is going to fight them on that,” remarked Claridge’s brother, David Claridge, to KWCH. “I’m exploring ways to get these officials recalled. This is insane to me.”
While the Emporia city commission ultimately greenlit the zoning modifications required for the project, there has been significant public backlash against AI data center initiatives in various states, citing concerns over power usage, water consumption, noise pollution, and tax breaks. Proponents argue that these facilities are essential for advancing artificial intelligence services, while residents have raised questions about the potential impact on local resources and infrastructure.
The incident highlights a growing trend of organized opposition to AI data centers throughout the United States.
A report from Brookings in January had warned that local apprehensions regarding electricity needs, water usage, and noise were hindering proposed projects. As these concerns mounted, Maine lawmakers enacted legislation in April 2026 that temporarily halted the construction of large AI data centers while the effects on local communities were assessed.
Earlier this month, Reuters reported that there were 142 protests across 42 states, marking the first coordinated nationwide demonstrations against the rapid growth of AI infrastructure. Organizers demanded increased transparency in the approval process, enhanced protections for water and energy resources, community benefits, and accountability from developers.
These protests occurred in states including Texas, Georgia, California, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Indiana, among others. This rise in opposition coincides with a June Reuters/Ipsos poll revealing that only 14% of Americans would support the establishment of an AI data center in their community.
