The Jülich Research Center, in collaboration with the startup eleQtron, has introduced the JION quantum computer that operates using ion traps. This innovative system utilizes qubits made from ionized ytterbium atoms and notably does not require cooling to near absolute zero temperatures.

JION will be integrated with the center's supercomputers via the JUNIQ infrastructure. Researchers and businesses are expected to leverage JION for hybrid computing applications across various fields, including logistics, chemistry, medicine, materials science, and machine learning. The project has secured approximately €21 million in funding.
